It changes often due to landslides. The best source is the Caltrans website (dot.ca.gov), enter “1” for Highway 1. If Google says it’s closed, it likely is, or there is a detour.
Greetings from USA, we plan to head down the Pacific Coast Highway from LA to SF. Google maps shows a closure at Big Sur, but I read on a US website that it is open again. Does anyone have fresh info please?

One ESTA is valid for 2 years and for multiple entries. So you can use the same ESTA for both the transfer and the subsequent stay.
